This is one of three Space Marines with Terminator Honours first advertised in White Dwarf 118 in October 1989. I have the other two as well (the combat accessory was clipped off of one’s bolter by a previous owner), but they have yet to be painted. These heroes are decorated veterans who served (and survived!) a stint in Terminator-armored Space Marine units. The little bumps on the figure’s forehead are Service Studs, implanted to denote how many years the soldier has fought for the Imperium. I am certain I read the first published mention of this but can’t recall where; in present-day lore, the color of the stud determines whether it represents 5, 10, or 100 (!) years. I painted this one some time ago, but it remains one of my very favorite miniatures. The sculpting credits for the Rogue Trader-era Space Marines are so hard to pin down but I’m fairly confident this beautiful figure was one of Mark Copplestone’s. The pose is classic, the face is exquisite. It’s a treasured miniature in my collection.
