Blog Post – A Quick “About Me”

Hi there! I’m Bryan.

I love miniatures.

I’ll try to keep this somewhat brief (came back to this line after finishing the page – I failed).

I fell into the hobby of collecting, painting, and gaming with miniature figures in my early twenties. I (somehow) hadn’t yet seen the now-classic and tremendously-influential films Alien and Aliens. When I finally did see them, I was obsessed. I also happened to be very, very much into board gaming at the time. So I wondered, “Is there a board game that’s essentially Aliens the movie?”

Indeed, there is.

Space Hulk.

Published by Games Workshop in 1989, “Space Hulk” was designed by Richard Halliwell, with miniatures sculpted by Bob Naismith, and artwork by a slew of talented individuals.

I have never sought out a material possession as quickly and passionately as I did after finding out this existed. I acquired it, both expansion sets, and a great deal of metal miniatures very quickly.

Thus began my journey into the world of miniatures.

I’m not going to explain all of what the miniatures hobby entails – to be honest, it’s different for everybody. But…

Here are three things I love about miniatures.

1. These little figures are tiny sculptural works of art that I appreciate and enjoy through the act of painting them, and in a small way, making them “my own.” It’s like a little artistic collaboration with the sculptor.

2. Miniatures stimulate my imagination and are simply fun.

3. I can use (and have used!) miniatures to engage in play and collaborative storytelling. I’ve met a lot of great people that share this common interest, and I treasure the friends I’ve made.

All of these things have made the hobby of collecting, painting, and playing with miniatures a fulfilling creative outlet for me.

So welcome, I hope you find some inspiration here, and feel free to drop me a line anytime in the comments or via e-mail.
